Soon, I will be a wealthy man
I am proud of The Flying Banzini. Still, I try to be humble in this blog. Today, not so much. Today, full on happy arrogance.
I often write about all sorts of things other than our food. Yesterday, I had such a good day in the restaurant that, today, I write with pride about our food.
The sandwich pictured above is a Soft Bun Meatloaf Sandwich that I served yesterday to a family visiting from Saskatoon. Admittedly, the cooks went a little haywire with this one and piled the meatloaf a little high – but we do have portion control which means that this is the amount of meatloaf you get on our sandwich (just, usually not piled as high). More important than amount an appearance, it is delicious. I LOVE this sandwich. I have developed a substance abuse problem centred on Nico’s meatloaf and crispy pork belly. He has a chef from Holland ask for his recipes yesterday. Bwahahahaha… nope.
Chef Nico has the menu where I want it to be. I am particularly enamoured his meatloaf sandwich and his crispy pork belly sandwich because they are new and freakin’ delicious. To my palate, our porchetta, roast chicken, meatloaf, and crispy pork belly sandwiches are some of the best sandwiches I have ever had in my life.
So, at the risk of arrogance… there… I will say it. We make awesomely awesome magnificent sandwiches and we sell them at a very fair price in a pretty cool place.
Why people are not lined up down the street, I don’t know.
I note that men tend to favour the soft bun sandwiches and women tend to favour the paninis. I am equally proud of Late in the Evening (chicken) which is our most popular menu item as well as You Sexy Thing (beets) Zooma Zooma (beef), the latter of which is my favourite panini.
When it comes to pizza, I often leave the crust. I never leave the crust on ours. It is finished with a light coating of olive oil and sea salt. Also, freakin’ delicious.
I am a woman who always goes for the soft bun sandwich. Well, when I’m not having a pizza. Looking forward to trying the meatloaf sandwich.
OK, put the arrogance under your hat for another year!
Keen to get there and dig in.
hi Dave. i haven’t visited your restaurant yet, but i’ve been following your progress via the blog & very happy to hear of your success. i wanted to address the question of why people aren’t lining up down the street to eat at TFB. for my part, i haven’t come yet because i’m not interested in the items on your menu, particularly the sandwiches. i am just not someone who enjoys big sandwiches. i like small plates, am not a big meat eater. i’m bored of panini & pizza. the cheesecakes do look like fun, but haven’t been enough to lure me there. i’m not suggesting you change a thing. i think there are many people who will & do love what you do…but i thought it would be helpful to hear from someone who hasn’t come yet & why. best of the new year to you. i wish you every success.
Those were my in laws and husband’s aunt and uncle. We sent them there and They had such a great experience - the men had the meatloaf sandwich and said it was some good and they were very full! The ladies enjoyed their salads and paninis very much. Also, they of course enjoyed chatting toon town.
The porkbelly?! If I weren’t in a relationship I’d take it home and marry it. But my partner would find that creepy.
